Maurizio Scarpa, MD, PhD, is Founder and President of Brains for Brain Foundation, a European task force on brain and neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs), and Director of the Centre for Rare Diseases at the Dr Horst Schmidt Kliniken GmbH in Wiesbaden, Germany and Professor of Pediatrics at the Dept. for the Health of Woman and Children at the University of Padova, Italy.

Prof. Scarpa earned his medical degree and doctorate and completed his residency in paediatrics at the University of Padova in Italy. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in molecular biology and gene expression at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany, and in genetics and gene therapy at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Institute for Molecular Genetics, at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, USA.

Prof. Scarpa has extensive expertise as a basic scientist in genetics and biotechnology, as well as a clinician in the diagnosis and treatment of paediatric rare disorders, LSDs, and neurometabolic diseases. He is especially interested in developing diagnostic assays and new approaches for the treatment of LSDs. Dr Scarpa is Chair of Hunter Outcome Survey (HOS) Central Nervous System working group and a member of the HOS Global Executive Committee.
